Small towns where you can walk and in a few steps can reach the beach, where the roofs are still rustic and where you find always charming natural corners to discover a path that reaches a cove. What follows is our selection of some of the most charming villages one step away from the water on the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada.
We discover in this article the Mediterranean essence of Catalonia, its beautiful medieval towns, postcard beaches and charming corners … from South to North of the Catalan coast.
L’Ampolla de Mar
L’Ampolla is known as the gateway to the Delta. It has a family tourism, quiet and without overcrowding. L’Ampolla has always been a village dedicated to fishing, maritime traffic and, in recent times, tourism. The name L’Ampolla (« the bottle ») is due to the shape of the old mouth of the river Ebro and all its components that participate in the face of the town: the sea, the bay, the water, the land and the dunes. The Mediterranean Sea is concentrated in the bay of Fangar, offering mirages of light and color. A good location for your next audiovisual project. In this fishing village you will find a total of 8 beaches, from ¨Platja de Cap- Roig¨ to ¨Platja del Arenal¨, some of stones and others of sand, cliffs of red stone and a relaxed atmosphere.
L’Ametlla de Mar
L’Ametlla de Mar is a coastal town of the province of Tarragona. It has a coastline of about 20 km and more than 26 beaches and coves of turquoise water. It is located south of the city of Tarragona, near the Ebro delta. On the top of the cliffs that line the coast of l’Ametlla de Mar rises the castle of Sant Jordi d’Alfama. You can do adventure sports or just discover the different beaches in the area. It has the distinctive ¨Playas Vírgenes¨ awarded by Ecologists in Action. Small coves like ¨Cala Llenya¨ or virgin beaches of stones like the ¨Platja de Santes Creus¨ are true gems. Its fishing port is very interesting and picturesque and it is an ideal place to capture the marine essence for your audiovisual production or photographic shooting.
Altafulla and Tamarit
Altafulla is a coastal town very close to Tarragona’s capital and it has, in addition to its beautiful beach with a small but very cool seafront, a fantastic castle located in the old town. Nearby we find Tamarit, a small discreet and quiet fishing village with a large castle from the mid-11th century. The castle of Tamarit has a privileged and dominating position, as if it had been born from the same rock where it rests. From the beach it is easily accessible and you can enjoy from there beautiful views of the Costa Dorada. A fantastic place for your next photographic shooting or audiovisual production.
The Roc de Sant Gaietà
The Roc de San Gaietà is a picturesque little town, built between 1964 and 1972, as a fishing village, with ornate buildings following ancient architectural styles (Romanesque, Gothic, Mudejar) imitating typical corners of several areas of Spain in the style of the Spanish Village of Barcelona. It is of great tourist interest, and a pleasant and interesting location for your next audiovisual project.
Sitges
The fishing village of Sitges lives facing the sea and has managed to condense modernity and tradition into one municipality. It is located at the foot of the Garraf massif and only 38 km from the city of Barcelona. The picture of the church of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla facing the sea is seductive, but so is also its rich modernist heritage. The two bell towers with their characteristic silhouette are the most seen. You will find them at the end of the promenade, on the bastion, defining the skyline of the town.
Tossa de Mar
This small town on the Costa Brava with a castle facing the sea, is possibly one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia and the whole of Spain. There is nothing better than strolling through its streets full of small shops and then climb to the top of the walled enclosure of Vila Vella. The castle, from the 13th century, is the only example of a fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast. Its stone walls give shelter to the area known as the old quarter. If you are attentive, you will see a small access to the cove, a place where the fishermen left their boats after long hours of fishing. Will it be one of the locations for your next audiovisual project? You can also take a dip in one of its magnificent beaches and coves with turquoise water.
La Fosca and S’Alguer
The beach of La Fosca is located in Palamós, a very familiar area, and one of the best beaches of the Costa Brava. It is extensive, quiet, cozy, easily accessible and, in addition, a perfect place to walk by the sea. From La Fosca you can take a path to walk towards S’Alguer. S’Alguer is a beautiful fishing village that looks like a postcard or a fairy tale. This corner of the Costa Brava was declared « Bien de Interés Cultural » in 2004 to prevent anything from changing and ensure that this haven of peace and tranquility remains authentic forever. S’Alguer is a unique place full of charm that you can not miss if you visit the Palamós area. A location stopped in time that will be the delight of your audiovisual production or photographic shooting.
Begur
Begur is another town on the Costa Brava that multiplies the number of inhabitants in summer by up to ten. Out of season is it a quiet place, with a historic area, castle, defense towers, and several beaches and coves. As part of the municipality of Begur, and within walking distance, we will find the hamlet of Sa Riera and Sa Tuna, with a small and cozy cove, surrounded by pine trees and nature. Among its white houses, immaculate and full of flowers, stands out a small charming hotel, originally an old fishermen’s house, located on the seafront. Very close to Begur we also find Aiguablava that has earned a well-deserved reputation for its natural environment and the blue color of the sea that gives its name to the beach. And on the route to Ronda, another charming town in these region, you will find coastal landscapes and charming little corners.
Calella de Palafrugell
The coastline of Calella de Palafrugell is beautiful, arriving by the ¨Camí de Ronda¨ from Llafranc, you have incredible views of this village. Calella de Palafrugell preserves the charm of an old fishing village with its boats and white houses. Located between beaches and mountains, it has become one of the most beautiful and emblematic fishing towns of the Costa Brava. The arches on the seashore in Calella and its white fishermen’s houses where the sand is only a few steps away, are famous, an unique sight for the audiovisual project that you have in mind.
Cadaqués
This fishing village in the easternmost part of Spain was practically isolated until the 19th century. Its essence lies in the picturesque of its streets and the whitewashed houses, the boats on the beach and a climate touched by the fierce Tramuntana mountains. It is worth getting carried away by its labyrinthine framework that always flows into the sea. It combines the tradition of fishermen with its beautiful and crowded beaches. Secluded by the Cap de Creus mountains from the rest of the Ampurdán, it is linked to legendary artists such as Salvador Dalí. Cadaqués has a truly visual charm next to rocky coves that extend beyond the town, a true spectacle for the senses and for the most photographic shootings of sailors. A little away from Cadaqués we find Port Lligat, a very small town that is located in a cove in Cap de Creus. It is just a street that ascends and improves the views towards the bay. Famous because there is the Salvador Dalí Museum House, designed by the artist himself.
