BEGUR: ONE OF THE MOST CHARMING PEOPLE OF COSTA BRAVA.

BEGUR: ONE OF THE MOST CHARMING PEOPLE OF COSTA BRAVA.

Begur is one of the most charming villages of the Costa Brava. With a population that does not reach 4000 inhabitants but which in summer exceeds 40.000, Begur is without doubt one of the most charming villages of the Costa Brava.

Located in the Baix Empordà, 45 minutes from Girona and at 1:30 hour from Barcelona by car, and surrounded by the famous Begur Massif, this endearing village is known mainly for its diverse and beautiful coves and beaches.

With a very important historical past that goes back to prehistory, the old town of Begur is formed by different monuments like its medieval castle whose construction dates from the 11th century and that stands out as the town’s main architectural figure from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the entire coast. Also important are the Begur Towers built in the 16th century, with the aim of defending its inhabitants from pirate attacks.

The old fishermen’s barracks that adorn the coves and the various “Indianas” houses are now witness to a past marked by fishermen and the many traders and businessmen from Catalonia who sought wealth in South America and especially in Cuba. Alone out of Begur at least 500 people emigrated. But when Cuba became independent the rich returned and built similar housed as they were used to overseas, nowadays known as the “Indianos” o “Americanos”.

Importance also has the small Romanesque nucleus of Esclanyà that surrounds the church of Sant Esteve de Esclanyà, (13th century), temple that contains elements of different times like the Romanesque and makes us feel in our skin the passage of time. Today also the tower of the Castle of Esclanyà (14th century), with its Romanesque and rectangular plant, is preserved.

In Begur you will find some most outstanding beaches, from north to south:  Racó beach, Illa Roja, Sa Riera, Aiguafreda, Sa Tuna, Fonda beach, Fornells and Aiguablava.

Racó beach is long and wide and offers great views of the Medas Islands. Illa Roja cove stands out for its huge reddish rock, hence its name.

The beach of Sa Riera is the closest to Begur, located between Cala des Port des Pi and Cala del Rey, is a family beach that offers various sporting activities.

Aiguafreda is a small cove located to the east of the town. Here you will find a small pier for the fishermen’s boats and a picnic area.

Sa tuna is characterized by a stone cove and clean, transparent waters.

In the south you will find Fonda Beach, located at the foot of the Cap de Begur. With it`s dark and thick sand, this virgin beach is united to the beach of Aiguablava by one of the walking roads (known in spanish as caminos de ronda) hat has the municipality of Begur. This way you can observe some natural wonders like the natural pool that you can see in the following photos.

Further south we find the coves of Fornells, also joined by the “camino de ronda” (walking road). Cala de n’Estasia, Ses Orats, the cove d’en Malaret and the Port of Esclanyà are mostly stone coves and clear waters.

Finally, last but not least Aiguablava, one of the most beautiful beaches of the Costa Brava.  A cozy beach where in the middle of summer it becomes almost impossible to catch a good spot to enjoy it. Its crystalline waters and fine sand makes it one of the most tempting beaches by tourists and local people.

Worthy an extra mention is the already mentioned “caminos de ronda” a 20 km of coastline that connects the different coves and beaches from north to south.

Needless to say, the town and beaches of Begur are an excellent place for any shooting or audiovisual production.
